Cedar virus is not known to cause human disease.

No human-to-human transmission is recorded up to now.

Cedar virus shares a significant genomic similarities with the Nipah and Hendra viruses. For instance, they use the ephrin-B2 receptor for entry during infection. Therefore, Cedar virus represents a unique opportunity of research.

Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) commonly cause upper and lower respiratory illnesses in infants, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, but anyone can get infected.

Symptoms generally appear 2 to 6 days after infection.

HPIVs usually spread by direct contact with infectious droplets or by airborne spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.

HPIVs may remain infectious in airborne droplets for over an hour and on surfaces for a few hours depending on environmental conditions

Hospitalisation occurs in 1 out of 4 unvaccinated people who gets measles.

Mortality occurs about 1 or 2 out of 1000 unvaccinated people with measles.

Serious complications are common in children under 5 years old and over 30 years of age.

Measles is one of the world’s most contagious diseases

Measles is normally passed through direct contact (coughing or sneezing) and the air

The virus remains active and contagious in the air or on infected surfaces for up to two hours

Transmission occurs from four days prior to the onset of the rash to four days after the rash erupts

Although infection with Hendra virus is rare, the case fatality is high: 4/7 (57%).

To date no human-to-human outbreak has been documented.

Genetically similar and low pathogenic Cedar virus currently used as a surrogate for the highly pathogenic Henipa viruses.

Death may occur in 40-75% of cases.

Long-term side effects in survivors of Nipah virus infection have been noted, including persistent convulsions and personality changes.

Infections that lead to symptoms and sometimes death much later after exposure (known as dormant or latent infections) have also been reported months and even years after exposure.
